the story behind innovative care

Innovative Care was built to provide outstanding care to my patients in my own practice, and to do something new and unique, innovative.

Listening to and believing patients has always been central to how I practice medicine. Frustration with our health care system, where insurance companies determine the value of my patient’s health and my care, pushed me to create something different. Smaller patient panels with more time and direct access allow patients to stay healthier.

Becoming a physician was shaped early on by admiration for my parents, who were the smartest people I knew, and by a desire to help people live fuller, healthier lives. My mother was a rheumatologist, and I had the honor of working with Drs. Bevra Hahn, Joan Bathon, and Stuart Levine prior to starting medical school. Through these influences, I learned how interesting rheumatology is, how it is often more an art, how important physical exam and history are, how broad the differential can be, and how much a rheumatologist has to be a detective.

Over time, it became clear how rheumatologists often appear to be the smartest person in the room, not by chance, but because they are often the last stop on the patient’s journey to a diagnosis and can build on everything that has already been ruled out. The treatments felt fascinating, and the field itself stood out for how much remains to be discovered. Long-term relationships with patients, the complexity of the diseases, and the need to understand all of medicine drew me further into the specialty.

Family and career are what matter most to me. Helping others, while continuing to learn, grow, and even find moments to laugh along the way, is what continues to drive my work.
